Many users of EdSim51 have
indicated an interest in a textbook on the 8051, based around the
simulator. This book, titled EdSim51's Guide to the
8051, is now available from Amazon.com.
EdSim51’s Guide to the
8051 is a
comprehensive exploration of the core of one of the world’s most
popular series
of 8-bit microcontrollers. It begins with the very basic operations of
any
microcontroller, then focuses on the 8051 itself, including the on-chip
timers
and serial port, interrupts, parallel ports and peripheral interfacing.
All are
explained in detail, with the use of many examples and diagrams.
Full colour
screenshots of the EdSim51
simulator are embedded throughout the text, illuminating the topic
under
discussion. In this way, the reader gets to see exactly the effects a
running
assembly program has on the controller’s registers and on the attached
peripherals. The reader is encouraged to download (for free) the
simulator from www.edsim51.com
and try out the book’s many examples.
The penultimate
chapter contains many more
examples in assembly, designed to exercise the simulator’s peripherals,
while
the final chapter contains an example written in C. This C program
contains a
driver for the HD44780 LCD module, designed for writing to the module
as
interfaced to the simulator.
